Song Backgroud

This song is inspired by Hikayat Panji Semirang. It evokes the lovers’ tale of Raden Galuh Chendera Kirana and Raden Inu Karpati. Having run away from the royal palace, Chendera Kirana, alone and dejected, takes a breather in the forest. Thinking of her lost love, she plays with her beloved pet bird that can dance.

In the Joget Gamelan Timang Burung, every movement emulates the graceful movement of a bird in flight or at rest, exuding simple joy and serenity.

Getting to Know the Concept of “Buka Lagu

A typical gamelan song will dedicate an opening phrase called “Buka Lagu”. In this context, the whole phrase as highlighted with green lines are the Buka Lagu of the Timang Burung. Buka Lagu serves as an opening excerpt to initiate the song. Unlike other ensembles, in traditional songs for Gamelan Melayu, the song will typically begin with either Bonang or Gambang playing the Buka Lagu of the song in solo.

At the end of the phrase (in Timang Burung is note 5 as per highlighted in blue diamond ),

all other gamelan instruments in the ensemble will play the last note of the Buka Lagu

phrase.

Getting to know the hand position when playing bonang

Blue arrow: Left hand

Red arrow: Right hand

Since bonang is played using both hands, the left hand will cover the left part of the bonang and the right hand will cover the right part of the bonang. As for the note 3, it is played under some circumstances. For example, if the note before is 5 or 6, then the left hand will hit the upper 3 and the right hand will hit the lower 3. This is shown as figure below. Whereas, if the note before is 1 or 2, then the right hand will hit the upper 3 and the left hand will hit the lower 3. These are shown in the figures above and below.
